Our Mission & Why It Matters

Jockey Hollow is a place of resilience, sacrifice, and American history. In the winter of 1779–1780, more than 10,000 Continental Army soldiers endured the harshest winter of the 18th century here—longer and colder than Valley Forge. Their story of perseverance and unity deserves to be remembered by generations to come. Your support ensures these stories are preserved, interpreted, and experienced by every visitor.

What We’ve Achieved So Far

Thanks to community support and our partnership with the National Park Service, we’ve already invested $1.8 million into improvements at Jockey Hollow, including:

  • Comprehensive internal signage across the park
  • Conducted archeological investigations per NPS compliance standards for fieldwork
  • Installed an information monitor inside Jockey Hollow Visitor's Center
  • Replaced rotted fence with an historically accurate custom fence at the Wick Garden
  • Providing ongoing horticultural care in the Wick Apple Orchard
  • Restoration and maintenance of 27 miles of historic trails
  • Expanded interpretive resources for the Spring Encampment
  • Complete renovation of the 50-year-old Comfort Station with:
    • ADA-accessible upgrades
    • New roof
    • Structural and plumbing improvements
    • Native landscaping enhancements
    • 10 interpretive medallions in new sidewalk
  • Mutiny Trail planning conducted by New York/New Jersey Trail Conference
  • Engaged Tetra Tech, Inc. to prepare EPA compliance application for Mutiny Trail

What We’re Working Toward

We are raising an additional $640,000 to prepare Jockey Hollow for America’s 250th anniversary. Your donation supports:

    • Includes educational signage and immersive interpretation

  2. Legacy Improvement Fund

Celebrating America's 250th Anniversary in 2026

Dear Friends and Supporters,

First and foremost, we want to extend our heartfelt best wishes to you and your family as we head into the Thanksgiving holiday season.

The Friends of Jockey Hollow’s mission is to spread the imperative message to the nation of the extraordinary role that Jockey Hollow and Morristown played during the American Revolution. Our hope is that with the leadership of our community, we can illuminate this fact so that ultimately history books will include Jockey Hollow’s vital role alongside that of Valley Forge!

With this aim in mind, we have been planning and implementing major capital improvements for Jockey Hollow since our formation in 2021. Specifically, these plans total approximately $2.5 million. Due to key local and national support, we have already raised and reinvested $1.6 million to projects that include a new fence at the Wick Garden, orchard restoration, trail upgrades, and the complete renovation of the 50-year-old New York Brigade Comfort Station with ADA-accessible features, structural improvements, and new interpretative medallions.

Thanks to our partners at the National Park Service, the Wick House, roads, and soldiers’ huts have also seen critical preservation work.

Yet, decades of deferred maintenance and flat budgets mean much remains to be done.

Our Campaign for America 250 seeks to raise an additional $640,000 to:

  • Create the Pennsylvania Line Mutiny Trail – the first new trail in over 80 years, telling a long-overlooked story of protest and perseverance.

  • Establish a Legacy Improvement Fund – addressing critical infrastructure needs and supporting educational enhancements at the Visitors Center.

  • Expand Visitor Engagement & Outreach – growing programming and marketing, beginning with a larger Spring Encampment Weekend (April 18–19, 2026).

Together, these projects will ensure that every visitor can experience Jockey Hollow’s story of perseverance in a meaningful, accessible, and inspiring way.

We invite you to join us in preserving this legacy. With your support, Jockey Hollow will be ready to shine in 2026.

With much gratitude,
Leslie Bensley, Executive Director
